Understanding Tea-Washed Rugs

Tea-washed rugs are very common in today’s rug marketplace. These rugs are treated to create an aged or antique sepia-toned appearance.

Traditionally, rugs were sometimes packed in tea leaves to help create this effect. Today, however, the look is usually achieved using dyes or chemical treatments that darken the rug and give it an older appearance.

In this educational video, Bill Corridan explains what tea-washed rugs are and discusses some of the unique problems and cleaning challenges these rugs can present.

Certain tea-washed treatments can create issues involving color stability, discoloration, or uneven appearance changes over time.

Tea-washed rugs may require special cleaning precautions. Certain dyes and chemical treatments used to create the antique appearance can sometimes create stability or appearance concerns during cleaning.
