Ask About Rug Cleaning

We are here to help you protect your rugs from damaging insects.

Moths and other insects can cause serious damage to wool rugs, Oriental rugs, and other natural fiber textiles. The good news is that regular inspection, proper cleaning, and a few simple habits can make a big difference.

Tips to Help Protect Rugs from Moth Damage

  1. Vacuum both sides of the rug.
Vacuum the face of the rug weekly. Periodically turn the rug upside down and vacuum the back side as well.
  2. Clean up spills immediately.
Food and drink residue can attract insects. See our spot and spill tips for help with different types of spills.
  3. Inspect your rugs regularly.
Look for moth larvae, bare spots, webbing, or anything that resembles sticky lint or spider webs. Moths often eat wool pile from the back side while leaving the cotton foundation behind.
  4. Ask about moth repellent after professional washing.
When your rugs are professionally washed, a moth repellent treatment may be recommended. This helps make the rug less appealing to moths.
  5. Pay attention to dark, undisturbed areas.
Moths like quiet, dark places — especially underneath heavy furniture where rugs are not disturbed.
  6. Have wool rugs professionally washed.
Moths are more attracted to dirty rugs. Periodic professional washing is important. Industry guidance commonly recommends rug washing every 1–3 years depending on use and conditions.
  7. Use sunlight when appropriate.
Moths do not like bright sunlight. If possible, bring rugs outside into the sun a couple of times per year for a few hours.
  8. Use a high-quality rug pad.
A good rug pad helps eliminate air pockets where moths and other insects may hide.
  9. Store wool rugs properly.
Before storing wool rugs, have them professionally washed and treated with moth repellent. Avoid plastic wrap for long-term storage.

If you notice a moth infestation, call a pest control specialist first. The infestation should be addressed before the rug is taken in for professional washing.

The best protection for your rugs is regular vacuuming on both sides, routine inspection, and professional washing at proper intervals.
